Since this idea has been on my mind, I have a couple of back-logged mental blog posts, let's take them one at a time.
Topic 1: my one and only successful project/assignment in 6 weeks of interning...
In other news from Capitol Hill… I got into my first hearing today! In fact, if you’d like I can direct you to video of the hearing where you can almost see the corner of the back my head… exciting stuff, I know. Anyways it was a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing on Green Jobs. The first panel had Gov’s from Washington, North Dakota, New Jersey and Colorado, second panel was boring mayors.
Overall it was pretty interesting. I, along with the Senate, had been wondering about the specifics of these green jobs. I made it to the office around 2 pm to find an e-mail from my boss that she sent early this morning (I left my Georgetown dorm at 8 in order to get in line for the hearing that began at 10 am) asking me if I could watch it and report back to her on what Ritter (Colorado’s governor) had to say.
Ritter is a democrat who has spent his time in office making life hard for the natural gas industry and all but driving them out of the state (Colorado has enough natural gas to run the country forever… or something… they have a lot). Recently, he’s spoken out supporting natural gas as essential to CO2 reductions and movement toward a cleaner future. Possibly because he’s up for re-election in 2010, possibly cause the state has lost a lot of money from the decrease in natural gas activity. He didn’t talk much about natural gas, and I wasn’t specifically targeting him, since I hadn’t read the e-mail, but I re-viewed parts of the hearing, went through my notes and typed up a news-article style memo to my boss on it. She came by and congratulated me saying it was excellent and she sent it out to all these important people. She even asked if I had written it… kinda funny.
Just a bit of background, previous assignments from my boss have included:
- looking up the name a Congressman's Chief of Staff
- looking up the dates of the August recess for both houses
- licking some envelopes (another woman put the letters in and labels on them, I could not be trusted to ensure the names on the letters and labels matched. a legitimate concern I'm sure)
- looking up the dates of the August recess for both houses, again
